The Types of Color Blindness, Explained

"Color blind" sounds like a single condition, but it covers a range of color vision deficiencies — and very few of them mean seeing in black and white. Most people who are color blind see plenty of color; they just can't separate certain pairs the way others can. Here are the main types.

The biology in one paragraph

Typical color vision relies on three types of cone cells in the retina, each most sensitive to long (red), medium (green), or short (blue) wavelengths. Color vision deficiency happens when one cone type is shifted, weak, or missing. Which cone is affected decides the type.

Red-green deficiency (the common kind)

By far the most widespread, red-green deficiency comes in four flavors:

  • Protanomaly — red cones are shifted; reds look duller and darker.
  • Protanopia — red cones missing entirely.
  • Deuteranomaly — green cones shifted; the most common form of all, and usually mild.
  • Deuteranopia — green cones missing.

People with these forms often confuse reds, greens, browns, and oranges, especially in low light. Because the genes sit on the X chromosome, it's much more common in men (~8%) than women (~0.5%).

Blue-yellow deficiency (tritan)

Tritanomaly and tritanopia affect the blue cones, making blues and yellows hard to tell apart. It's rare and, unlike red-green, affects men and women about equally because the gene isn't X-linked.

Complete color blindness (achromatopsia)

The truly "see in grayscale" version — achromatopsia — is very rare. It usually comes with light sensitivity and reduced visual sharpness, because it involves the cone system broadly rather than one color channel.
